Social (ly-distanced) Fabric(s): Guide to Artmaking in the Pandemic is a compendium of at-home artmaking resources and projects from students in the Social Fabric(s) Spring 2020 semester at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, taught by Christalena Hughmanick. Quarantine posed a challenge for a class that is centered on community building through art making. We decided to continue this spirit of collectivity on our final project, albeit remotely. For the “Exquisite Corpse” final project, we created a schedule that allotted each student 48 hours to make a piece in response to the one made before. At the end of this period, they sent a picture of their work to the next person on the schedule and so on. This was a way to create a chain of connectivity and inspiration, while involving people across several states, countries and time zones to complete. Both documents were designed by Mariah Joyce.
