Hey there,
I’m taking a quick detour from the usual 'field notes' to tell you about my next performance work and to ask for your help with it. Last fall, I was hit by a van while walking in Iceland and suffered multiple spinal compression fractures. In May I will be taking a 5 day walking pilgrimage in the tradition of many seekers that I greatly admire, to look for quiet guidance (Bashō, Egeria, Saint James, Freya Stark, Rumi, Kaihōgyō). I was not able to work much so spent the winter in bed recovering and stitching textiles for natural dye processes. I will now return to the landscape as a site for meditation, creation and transformation. I see this as the next step in my healing.
I will be walking with my collaborator Bjorn Jonsson of @innraytra in garments that we will construct and wear throughout. We often work with natural dye together and use walking as a way to collect materials to pigment our fabrics. In this work, it is the natural elements and our bodies that will dye the fabric over the course of the walk and be the primary artifact for exhibition. A drawn map used for navigation, fragments of writing and a series of sound recordings made on the journey will accompany the garments in the summer 2022 exhibition at the Factory in Djupavík. The show is curated by Emilie Morkeberg Dalum.
This project came together quickly and I’m not able to get grants in Iceland or the US so I seek monetary contributions from you. If you received this email, you have been a supporter of pat projects. Funds will cover material costs for garment fabric, camera film, food and lodging each night, as well as editing and distribution costs associated with producing the album ($2,000 USD in total). Any small amount is appreciated and you will be credited in the exhibition. Additionally, I will share part of the resulting album with you before it goes to market.
You can send as a 'gift' via PayPal to christalena.hughmanick@gmail.com or click HERE. You may also consider purchasing items in the web shop, as all proceeds go directly into studio projects. Thanks for your attention and support.
Love, CH
